Why am I Always Feeling Run Down?
Normally we associate the seasonal sniffles with winter. Yet do you find yourself keep feeling 'run down' even without the wintery bugs to blame?
The danger comes when we find ourselves on a cocktail of medicines and pharmaceuticals, never really knowing what the problem was in the first place
Now we're no Dr surgery, and whilst GP prescribed, and over the counter medicines most certainly can alleviate ailments, there are also some more natural ways to help (covered in July 18th's blog).
Let's look some of the reasons why we might feel constantly run down (besides catching germs & viruses)
1 - Macro Imbalance - Ever heard of keto flu? When your body is deprived of carbohydrates we can experience flu like symptoms. Carbohydrates get a bad rap, but are essential (in balanced quantities) for physical strength & brain health. If you're skipping meals, avoiding carbs or have too heavy an imbalance of any macro group, your body will experience the same symptoms to a car running without any petrol. Not enough water will also lead to dehydration which can make us feel sluggish & run down.
2 - Sleep Stages - Got out of the wrong side of the bed? We can't control what happens when we fall asleep, however routine can help optimise our sleep health to ensure we wake up rested & fully charged. If your alarm wakes you whilst in deep sleep or REM, you could feel groggy, unrested or irritable. If we drink excessive alcohol levels to fall asleep, your body doesn't spend adequate amounts of time in deep or REM, meaning again we may not feel fully rested when we wake (See July 4th's post on sleep quality for more)
3 - Refusing to Rest - The more run down we are, the slower we may go, meaning we're spending more time at a task than we might when at full health. Taking a break to stop and recover may seem like the last thing we want to do when we're feeling overwhelmed or half mast. But by allowing yourself to rest & fully recover can help us feel more alert & capable of tackling the task at hand
4 - Chemical Imbalance - Like the previous point, when feeling behind, slowed down potentially our time for socialising, exercise, getting out into nature & other serotonin boosting tasks go out the window. However constantly being in 'doing', 'fixing' or stress mode will further drain our physical reserves. Finding the time to boos serotonin levels will help us feel more capable when getting back to daily life.
