The Little Luxuries That Make an Ordinary Tuesday Feel Expensive
Share
How to romanticise your everyday life without spending a fortune.
There is something wonderfully satisfying about a Tuesday that has absolutely no business feeling luxurious.
No hotel booking. No special occasion. No particularly impressive bank balance.
Just clean sheets, a favourite outfit, a beautiful drink and the slightly ridiculous excitement of feeling like the leading lady in your own very ordinary afternoon.
Somewhere along the way, we’ve been sold the idea that becoming the woman we want to be requires a complete transformation.
A new wardrobe. A new routine. A new life.
Preferably involving a sun-drenched apartment, matching Pilates sets and a fridge containing seventeen varieties of organic produce.
But perhaps she’s already here.
She just needs us to stop saving all the lovely things for special occasions. The countless outfits and accessories that never see the light of day, waiting, preserved, gathering dust, all saved for an imaginary occasion. This is most defianteley me.
The woman you want to become probably has Tuesdays, too
There’s a lot of conversation online about becoming her, romanticising your life and embracing your main-character era.
And I understand the appeal.
Who wouldn’t want to feel like the effortlessly polished woman who drinks beautiful things, remembers to moisturise, perpetually has fresh flowers in her kitchen & looks like an 'Emily in Paris' extra.
But the problem with aspiring to a future version of ourselves is that we can accidentally put our current lives on hold, stroking the beautiful things whilst in our worn joggers.
We’ll dress beautifully when we lose weight.
Buy the lovely glassware when we move house.
Start enjoying our mornings when work becomes less stressful.
Create a proper evening routine when life finally settles down.
And in the meantime?
We’re living approximately 87% of our lives waiting for the remaining 13% to become more impressive.
What if we simply started now?
Not with a dramatic reinvention. Just with a few little choices that make an ordinary day feel rather more enjoyable. And no - I don't mean we should all start WFH in that sequin body con.
1. Stop saving the good things
You know the beautiful glasses you bought and then carefully put away?
Use them.
The expensive-looking mug that only comes out when somebody visits?
That’s yours. You’re allowed to enjoy it.
The lovely skincare you’ve been rationing for an occasion worthy of its existence?
Tuesday is an occasion.
One of the easiest ways to make everyday life feel more luxurious is to stop treating your favourite things as though they belong to a more deserving version of you.
Pour your sparkling water into a proper glass. Add ice, fresh citrus and a sprig of rosemary.
Suddenly, a five-minute afternoon break feels a little more like sitting outside a beautiful hotel.
Same kitchen. Same Tuesday.
Entirely different experience.
2. Upgrade the things you do every single day
If you’re going to do something hundreds of times a year, surely that’s where a little luxury makes the most sense?
Embrace your daily drink.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with grabbing something convenient and getting on with your day. But there’s also something lovely about choosing a drink because you genuinely enjoy the experience of having it.
Imagine opening a tin of loose-leaf botanical tea, catching the scent of toasted maté, cocoa nibs and cinnamon, and watching the leaves infuse. Imagining which part of the world they've all come from. Not just scrolling through e-mails and willing the kettle to boil double time.
Or pouring a chilled botanical sparkling blend over ice before sitting down to work. Taking 5 minutes to set intentions & structure.
Not because you need to become a new person before 9am.
Simply because you’re allowed to enjoy your morning.
That’s the thinking behind Catalyse.
We wanted to create drinks and rituals that feel as beautiful and considered as the moments you choose to enjoy them in.
Sometimes that means a warm cup of tea. Sometimes it’s a sparkling drink on the go. Sometimes it’s a proper mocktail on a Wednesday evening, complete with garnish, because frankly, why not?
Luxury doesn’t always need a reservation or red soles.
3. Dress for the life you’re actually living
I’m not suggesting you wear heels to empty the dishwasher.
Unless that’s your thing, in which case I admire the commitment.
But there’s something to be said for getting dressed in a way that makes you feel like yourself, even when nobody particularly important is going to see you.
The soft knit you love.
The matching gym set that makes you look forward to Pilates.
A little jewellery with your ordinary outfit.
Your favourite fragrance before sitting down at your laptop.
These things aren’t about impressing anybody else.
They’re about how you experience your own day.
And sometimes the difference between feeling like you’re merely getting through Tuesday and actually enjoying it is surprisingly small.
I used to wear whatever was to hand, I looked scruffy, I felt it, and unsurprisingly it bled into the day. Now I try to style my hair - somewhat, I'm always wearing Tatti lashes & matching athlesiure wear - not expensive things, but all choices that contribute to the feeling that i'm on top of my life.
4. Make your routines feel like rituals
A routine is something you do.
A ritual is something you look forward to.
The difference isn’t necessarily time, money or effort. Often, it’s simply attention.
Making tea becomes choosing your favourite blend, using a beautiful infuser and taking a moment while it brews.
Going to Pilates becomes packing your bag the night before, taking your favourite drink and enjoying the walk home.
Researching a new recipe, setting time aside & enjoying creating something beautiful & nourishing for yourself.
An evening on the sofa becomes dimming the lights, putting your phone away and making yourself something lovely to sip. For me - this time of year it also includes lighting about 8 pumpkin spice candles.
Even a few minutes with a gua sha, a journal or a set of affirmation cards can feel like a small appointment with yourself.
And you don’t need to perform any of it for Instagram.
In fact, some of the nicest rituals are the ones nobody else ever sees.
5. Create a little atmosphere
Never underestimate what lighting a candle can do for a room that contains three loads of washing and an unanswered electricity bill.
Atmosphere is one of the most accessible forms of everyday luxury.
Open the windows.
Put on music.
Clear the kitchen counter.
Use the good hand cream.
Make yourself an iced botanical tea and take it into the garden for ten minutes, even if the garden is technically a balcony with one surviving plant.
None of these things changes the bigger picture of your life.
But they can make the bit you’re living right now feel considerably nicer.
And that matters, too.
6. Let your evening have a little occasion
We’re quite good at making an effort when we go out.
We choose an outfit, book somewhere boujee, order something interesting, savour the experience & share it on stories.
Then we get home and drink whatever happens to be nearest the fridge door.
I think our evenings deserve better.
Not every night needs to become an elaborate wellness ceremony. But there’s something rather wonderful about preparing a beautiful alcohol-free drink, adding a botanical garnish and settling into the evening as though it’s somewhere you actually want to be.
A chilled Acqua over ice.
A fragrant cup of Relaxation tea.
A mindful mocktail in the glass you usually reserve for guests.
A little celebration of the fact that you made it through another day.
No special occasion required.
The real luxury is enjoying the life you have
Perhaps the loveliest part of romanticising your everyday life is realising that it doesn’t require you to become somebody else.
You can want more for your future while still making your present feel beautiful.
You can be ambitious and enjoy a slow morning.
You can be building something extraordinary while appreciating the very ordinary pleasure of a lovely cup of tea.
And you can make considered choices without turning your entire existence into a self-improvement project.
That’s what we believe at Catalyse.
Wellness should feel enjoyable. Beautiful things should be used. And the little choices we make every day deserve just as much attention as the big milestones we’re working towards.
Because the woman you want to become?
She probably still has emails to answer, washing to fold and Tuesdays to get through.
She might as well have a lovely drink while she’s doing it.
That’s all for now!
