Tired But Still Wired? Try This Instead
You’re tired. You’ve been tired all day. But the moment you finally stop… Your brain speeds up.
You scroll.
You snack.
You drift between tabs and thoughts. Pick up a journal, put it down again. Check Instagram again.
And somehow, instead of relaxing… you feel even more wired.
We’ve all heard the usual advice
Breathe slowly. Put your phone down. Listen to calming music. Journal. Gratitudes
And to be fair -those things do work. Just not always… and not straight away.
Because when you’re in that “tired but wired” state, your body isn’t ready to switch off yet.
It’s not resisting relaxation - it just hasn’t transitioned into it and is demanding quick dopamine.
So instead of trying to switch off… do this first
Before you try to relax, give your body a short, intentional release of energy.
Nothing intense. Nothing overwhelming.
Just something small that lets your system settle:
- A quick tidy or reset of your space - yes messy desks included
- A few minutes of stretching or pacing
- Finishing a simple task you’ve been avoiding
- Prepping something easy in the kitchen
It sounds counterintuitive, but this is often the missing step. By doing something you're giving your mind an outlet to start & complete a task - which releases hormones that you're probably looking for in the wrong places.
When your body has somewhere to put that leftover energy… it becomes much easier to actually relax afterwards.
Then, instead of removing stimulation - change it
This is where most advice gets frustrating.
You’re told to stop scrolling, turn everything off, sit in silence… I hated this advice 'Oh you can't relax? Sit still, in the dark, don't think, just breathe' - cue dramatic eye roll.
But when your brain is still active, that can feel impossible.
So instead, try shifting the type of stimulation you’re giving yourself.
- Fast, jumpy content → something slower and more absorbing
- Bright overhead lighting → warmer, softer light
- Chaotic input → something repetitive or familiar, like voice-noting a friend
You’re not forcing calm. You’re guiding your brain into it.
Create a signal your body recognises
Once you’ve moved through that first burst of energy and softened your environment, this is where small rituals start to work. Not as a “fix”… but as a signal.
Something consistent your body begins to associate with slowing down.
For some, that might be a warm drink. For others, it’s a specific moment in the evening where things shift.
Acqua was designed for exactly this part of the day - not to knock you out, but to support that transition into calm, with ingredients that work gently alongside your body. When i stopped drinking alcohol, my biggest worry was not being able to relax, however it was actually the wind down ritual that was working for me, not the fact it was alcohol in my glass. I kept the ritual, but upgraded the liquid.
The shift
Relaxation isn’t something you can always switch on instantly.
Sometimes, it’s something you move into in stages.
A little movement.
A softer environment.
A familiar signal.
And suddenly, the thing that felt impossible… feels natural.
